The Súria anticline -el Mig-món- (Ebro Basin, deformed foreland)

Mostra un mapa més gran
In less than 600 characters
In the centre of the Ebro basin are potent saline deposits covered by thick alluvial continental sequences.
Around the upper Eocene, Pyrenees progress tectonically affected areas located almost in this area. Evaporitic deposits acted as detachment level of the upper strata favouring the formation of folds and thrusts. Salts, with their ability to accumulate and ascending flow forming large domes.
The Mig-món anticline is a fold formed by the diapiric rise described above.

Montjuïc hill (Valencia trough)

In less than 600 charecters
Montjuïc  is one of the few outcrops of the Miocene record of Barcelona semi graven.  Corresponds to a coastal  alluvial fan that had the source area in the range of Collserola.
The main bulk of the alluvial fan are detrital material, but the transgressions of the Mediterranean left some very interesting marine wedges. In the port area of goods, a cut that spectacular to watch the entire sequence.

The Sant Llorenç del Munt massif is constituted by around 1000 m of massive conglomerates. This imposing mass rudites correspond to the proximal facies of a coastal alluvial fan that flows into the Ebro Basin during the Eocene. This alluvial fan is contemporary alluvial fan of Montserrat.
But a transect between the towns of Matadepera amd Manresa is possible observer all facies typical of this type of depositional system (delta plain, coastal plain, delta front, slope, carbonate platform, etc.).  Many outcrops of high value teaching!
In recent years taken on international significance as a place of training for petroleum geologists.

The Puigcercós landslide (Pyrenees, upper mantle)

In less than 600 characters
This sliding movement is too recent (January in 1881) and hit the old town of Puigcercós (Tremp, Lleida), now abandoned. It is an excellent example of moving mass-transfer complex with rotation and flow. Worth noting its dimensions, and the excellent level of preservation of the typical forms (scar coronation to 200 m, rotating platform and frontal lobe). It is a magnificent example to illustrate how the concepts of hazard, vulnerability and geological risk.

Barcelona Hills (Catalan Coastal Ranges)

In less than 600 characters
The hills of Barcelona are located between the Quaternary littoral plain, where the old part of the city was settled, and the Collserola range. In the hills, a succession of Paleozoic rocks affected by a number of tectonic episodes is preserved (Variscan orogeny, Mesozoic extension, Paleogene compression and Neogene extension). The small size of the mappable units is a scientific challenge. Some of the best outcrops are in Park Güell, a good reason for that geologists visited the work of the famous architect Antoni Gaudí.

The "core" of the massif of Montserrat is constituted by around 1000 m of massive conglomerates. This imposing mass rudites corresponds to the proximal facies of a coastal alluvial fan that flows into the Ebro Basin during the Eocene. Three It should be noted aspects:

  1. It is a paradigmatic example in the world that allows fine depositional sequences in an alluvial fan.
  2. On a geomorphological feature the impressive forms (monoliths, cliffs...).
  3. It is a place of special historical significance, cultural and spiritual in Catalonia.

Croscat volcano (Ebro Basin, deformed foreland)

Croscat is one of forty volcanoes Volcanic Area Garrotxa. Special importance that is given by the following facts:

  1. Is the largest strombolian conus in the Iberian Peninsula (160 m high and 800 m in diameter).
  1. Is the youngest volcano in the Iberian Peninsula (the last eruption has only about 11,500 years).
  1. A part of conus was exploited, opening an interesting outcrop which today allows a detailed observation and has a high educational value.
  1. Led to an lava outflow of 20 km2, type aa. About this is the casting of the Jordà beechwood, a most interesting mature forests of Catalonia.

Miocene vertebrate site of Can Mata dump (Margin of the Valencia Trough, Vallès-Penedès depression)

In less tan 600 characters
The dump of Can Mata is a very important palaeontological site. Including, at the moment, a succession of one hundred points containing micro and macro-vertebrate, spread over about 300 m of stratigraphic series. Comprises a interval of time of more than one million years.
This deposit was discovered from the redevelopment of a landfill. Successive excavations as they advanced the works have allowed to extract tens of thousands of fossils. Their study provides a unique opportunity to investigate Aragonian terrestrial ecosystems in south-western Europe. Of all the findings, highlights a new species of ape, the Pierolapithecus catalaunicus.

Ribes Blaves gauge (Catalan Coastal Ranges)

Ver mapa más grande
In less tan 600 characters
The boundary between the Catalan Coastal Ranges to the margin of the Valencia Trough is a staggered fault of hundreds of miles. Affects the Hercynian basement and has a complex history. Paleogene was to act as a directional fault, while during the Neogene acted as a normal fault with a jump of thousands of feet.
This led to a severe strain gauges of the most paradigmatic of Europe, with a high scientific and scenic value. Discontinuously along the outcrops of about 30 km, and between Esparraguera to Terrassa. One of the most spectacular is Ribes Blaves (Olesa de Montserrat).

Basaltic cliffs of Castellfollit de la Roca (Ebro Basin, deformed foreland)

The basaltic cliffs of Castellfollit de la Roca are a one of the sites most popular of Catalan geological heritage thanks to its unique beauty. It is located in the Volcanic Zone of the La Garrotxa, comprising more than 40 Quaternary volcanic cones in excellent condition.
The cliff is formed by overlapping two volcanic lava flows invaded the valley of the river Fluvià. Later, the river dug this obstacle and describes this remarkable precipice. One of the most notable is the disjunction in its hexagonal columns.

They are two small tectonic gravens in echelon. They have about 9 km long and 500 meters wide and are limited by normal faults. The vertical jump is a minimum 50 m. They are located in a very flat region of Cenozoic sediments, which has almost no tectonic deformation. Presents some remarkable characteristics, such as:
  • The low sinuosity of its limits.
  • Cut clearly of rivers that drain the basin.
  • His background is lower than the regional elevation.
All this suggests that they have a very recent origin.

Dinosaur traces from Fumanya South (Pyrenees, Lower mantle)

The outcrop of dinosaur traces from Fumanya South is located in an opencast coal mine. Actually are two sites adjacent with a surface 14,000 m2.  On the roof of a marly limestones  Maastrichtian strata, tilted about  60 degrees, there are plenty dinosaur footprints (2200!) and tracks of about 30 titanosaurs.
This is the second most important site in the world of sauropods footprints. Also, this is the second most important site in the world of the Cretaceous; and the third most important site in the world in relation to surface traces, after Lark Quarry (Australia) and Chaoyang (China).

La Crosa de Sant Dalmai is a phreatomagmatic Quaternary volcano. It is perfectly preserved and has a high scientific and educational value. It should be noted the large crater, 1200 m in diameter, 225 m and maximum depth of 75, and the surface covered by material projected from 6 km2.
The cone is composed of fragments of basalt, granite and metamorphic rocks as a result of the different types of violent explosive eruptions that formed. Attached to the north lip, is a small volcano outlining which corresponds to a strombolian late phase.

Oliana anticline (Pyrenees, upper mantle)

Ver mapa más grande
In less than 600 characters
The anticline of Oliana is a structure clearly identifiable and is a very representative example of the eastern boundary of the south Pyrenean area, and his systems thrusts and folds, and relationships that took place between the tectonic, sedimentary and geomorphological processes.
In the northern flank of the anticline is a preserved collection of syntectonical sediments related to a series of thrusts that can define the sequence of this strain. The age of the sediments includes the Upper Eocene to Lower Oligocene.
